Westminster Dog Show Live Blogging: Day 2 (Ring 3)

12:35 | Arriving at the dog show: I positioned myself by the entrance of Ring 3 and saw the samoyeds being judged. Outside of the ring a small blond woman, with the #24 (Ch Mystic Oz’s Oslo) on her left arm, says to the guy next to me: “When they see this leopard print tell them to go crazy.”

It turns out that the man is the owner of the dog. His wife, standing next to him, tells me: “We’re just the custodial parents.”
The woman on the leopard print jacket and mini skirt adds: “And I’m the freak.” In other words, the trainer.

Here’s a short video of Leopard Print Lady:

12:42 | Overheard at the dog show: Man to woman: “She’s a stunning bitch.”Woman to man: “I keep telling her to show her.”
12:45 | Keep in up appearances: Number #24
(Ch Mystic Oz’s Oslo) and the leopard print woman is pulling at the collar discretely and muttering under her breath: “shut up.”Meanwhile, over at Ring 4 people are going crazy.
12:47 | A crowd favorite arises:
The crowd favorite for this round appears to be #20
(Ch Pebbles’ Run Love Actually).
12:49 | Leopard girl in ring: Finally #24
(Ch Mystic Oz’s Oslo) enters the ring, and together with about 10 other dogs, trots around the ring. After that initial trot, each dog takes another stroll.
12:59 | And to the winner…: Number 20
(Ch Pebbles’ Run Love Actually) won best of breed and they take pictures of it next to a vase filled with flowers. Because we all know how much dogs like flowers…Wait a second, do they?1:01 | Madison Sq. Garden smells of dog: Just outside of the ring a man goes around spraying the dogs’ paws with water to keep the dogs from slipping on the beautiful, if a little dirty by now, green carpet - or so I’m told. Also, leopard lady’s dog “made the cut.” What ever that means.1:05 | Curly Coated Retrievers: The first round of the curly coated are finally out in the ring. The handlers make them pose, fixing their heads, legs and tails. After a stroll around the ring, they get judged individually.

Check out #8’s (Ch Jangio’s Ringo Starr Kurlkrek) “show time”: (INSERT VIDEO)

(I swear they all look the same to me.)
1:12 | Dogs Behaving Badly:
I bet #10
(Pizzazz Topped With Desire) won’t be winning this one.

FYI: Show dogs smell each other just as regular dogs do.

1:15 | Good boy #10: My little friend actually pulled it off and behave like a regular show man - or dog (or bitch?).
1:25 | Curly Coated Retriever’s Winner: Well, after a nail bitter (ahem) the misbehaving dog didn’t win best in breed, but it did win something….”Best of opposite sex.”

1:45 | Howling dog: There’s a dog that doesn’t sound too happy. It’s funny how the trainer tries to calm him down very discretely, while others around her try not to stare.
1:49 | Of judges and dogs: Number 18’s
(Ch Fieldfine Topsfield Trademar) breeder, who just won with another dog on Ring 4, tells me that when dogs misbehave in the ring “sometimes they can lose.” But, he says, “not necessarily. It depends on how tolerant the judge is.”
He is also a judge.Oh well, what do I know about dogs. Two of my childhood dogs were killed by a car. Another one ran away. And the last one I gave away after a month of too much nighttime barking.
2:16 | Ron Paul?: A camera man walked by with a Ron Paul baseball cap.
FYI: So by now the smell is starting to get to me.
2:28 | Backstage at the dog show: After watching the judging on Ring 3 I went to the “grooming room” or “waiting room.”There’s a few cages where the dogs can do their thing (the owners must pick up after them) called EX-PENS.cages.jpg
The smell in that area is unbelievable!More dogs:
